Prosthetic Surgery
When the joint is severely damaged, the implantation of a prosthesis allows pain reduction and partial maintenance of mobility.
A timely diagnosis can make all the difference in your recovery.
Radiological images of an ankle prosthesis
Ankle arthroplasty is a surgical procedure that replaces the osteoarthritis-damaged joint between the tibia and talus with a prosthesis.
Thanks to technological advances, we now have a wide range of prostheses that restore mobility and reduce pain.
This surgery is indicated when conservative treatments (medication, physical therapy, insoles, etc.) are no longer effective. The most common causes are:
- Primary osteoarthritis
- Sequelae of fractures
- Rheumatic diseases
- Avascular necrosis
What is the procedure like?
The surgery is performed through one or more incisions in the ankle. The goal is to replace the damaged joint and correct any deformities, as well as secondary ligament injuries. It is generally carried out under general anesthesia, and the patient usually requires one or two nights of hospitalization.
And the postoperative period?
After surgery, the ankle is immobilized for 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the case. Gradual weight-bearing and functional recovery are then initiated. Full recovery may take up to 6 to 8 months.
Any questions?
In some cases, such as severe deformities, poor circulation, or uncontrolled diabetes, a prosthesis may not be recommended and arthrodesis (joint fusion) should be considered.
